Modern Industrial Aesthetic
The homeowners sought a complete change in aesthetic and had sold most of their traditional style possessions prior to their move. Their goal was to create a cozy home with comfortable living room furniture and to define the spaces within the open plan kitchen, dining and living room. The interior design styling is modern industrial with a sprinkling of traditional.
Because this open plan home has no delineation in the ceiling to define functional spaces we needed to do that with the living room furniture layout and lighting and decor throughout. I identified the main wall of the living room and selected a pair of large display cabinets to create a statement wall and provide a home for the entertainment center. To complete the entertainment wall I used large wall decor and the client’s existing traditional console table having it painted to match the display cases for a more contemporary styling. The display cases sit atop black iron bases for an industrial aesthetic and the sconces and kitchen decorative light fixtures follow suit. In contrast the oversized wall mirror above the fireplace mantel is gold, decorative and traditional. Use of large scale light fixtures in the dining room and kitchen defines those spaces. The dining room light fixture is modern while the kitchen light pendants are modern industrial.
I added a balance of color and texture in the seating group, used both light and dark woods, black and gold lighting fixtures and white lamps to repeat the kitchen cabinet color. A cream and navy modern style rug provides a foundation for the living room seating group. The adjacent dining area is punctuated with a double drum light fixture and the dining chairs’ upholstery fabric repeats the navy and cream pallet.
